America's Night Out Against Crime: "National Night Out" August 3, 2010

Meet your neighbors and local law enforcement to help prevent crime in your community during the 27th Annual National Night Out on August 3, 2010 which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). National Night Out is a crime and drug prevention event taking place in over 14,000 communities in all 50 states, plus U.S territories and military bases around the world. Over 36 million people are expected to participate in “America’s Night Out Against Crime.”

The goals of National Night Out are to:
-Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness
-Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts
-Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
-Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back

National Project Coordinator Matt Peskin said, “This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation.”

People are encouraged to turn on their front porch lights and go outside to meet their neighbors. Planned events include block parties, neighborhood cookouts, visits from local police and sheriff departments, parades, flashlight walks. and youth programs.
